Coffee has always been a part of mine and countless other’s recovery. When I was first getting sober, a greeting and a cup of coffee was my first experience with my recovery support group. I remember holding that cup of hot coffee. Not spilling it all over was my first challenge! That coffee pot also gave me a sense of purpose. Something this drunk hadn’t had in a long time. For me, to be given a job as important as making the coffee at the meeting was a huge boost to my non existent self esteem.
It also begin my journey with gratitude. Gratitude that someone believed in me and so I could in turn begin to believe in myself again. Today I look for those newcomers. The ones with desperation in their eyes and shaking hands holding that cup of coffee. I want to be there to offer a friendly hand. To share my experience, strength and hope. And a cup of hot coffee.
