Coffee and recovery go together like peanut butter and jelly. Ever since I went to my first meeting years ago, the coffee at meetings has been sacred to not only me, but many others. There is something about that hot coffee hitting my lips that makes me feel like I am home. I have been a daily coffee drinker for over 12 years. It is not a coincidence that I have also been around recovery for over 12 years now.
I have heard multitudes of people sharing their experience, strength, and hope while clutching onto my coffee at meetings. Likewise, many people have listened to my stories while sipping on that liquid brown gold. For me, coffee symbolizes the energy and vigor needed in recovery. The coffee pot is where some of the most personal conversations take place and where many people in recovery can share a common bond with their new friends in recovery.
Coffee is known to have healing properties for the body and (I believe) the soul. It also has that caffeine for people like me who need that little something extra during their day. That extra little comfort and reinforcement has helped me, and I am sure many others in recovery to get through difficult times. I know that coffee will continue to be there for me and for the millions of others who indulge. It brings us together with its majestic and glorious taste, but most importantly, with the love and comradery that it symbolizes.
